Title: Beaten
Artwork type: Representational
Artist's Statements:
- Beaten is a representational artwork that symbolizes the oppression of African people and especially African-American people. To honor those who have died fighting for their rights, I made this artwork. Beaten shows a woman who has tape on her mouth to symbolize the silencing of African people. Bruises on her skin to symbolize the violence committed to their community. Blood that symbolizes how much blood they had to shed just to be given their rights. As one can see, her dress is also violet. It is to symbolizes that they are royalties, monarchs, and powerful people too, but due to colonization, they were stripped of their titles and powers. This artwork wants people to know that they are still being oppressed. They are still fighting a deep and systematized war.
- This artwork was made using watercolors. The artist mixed wet-on wet techniques with dry-on wet techniques. Because the artist ran out of acrylics, he was not able to utilize it in this artwork. The artist used yellow as a way to kind of harmonize with the orange because the artist felt that just and orange background was monotonous.
Artist's notes:
